Description
Dr. Lyon grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. He majored in aerospace engineering at Auburn, graduating in 1971. He studied for his master's, then entered the workforce at Pratt and Whitney, working there from 1972-74. He first worked at Thiokol in the Engineering department, serving as a ballastician. He discusses the company's rising concern with combustion instability, and the experience of managing computer simulations to combat it. Dr. Lyon also spent 10 years assisting the ONS Navy office with ballistics sciences, where he had a variety of responsibilities, including community outreach. Eventually, he returned to Auburn and completed his master's in 1978. He would briefly teach a high school level course on rocket science, and continued to work in ballistic design for the Navy. He would return to Huntsville in 1987 and work for the Army's Propulsion Directorate at Redstone Arsenal, which enabled him to travel abroad frequently, and participate in international scientific events. He recieved a PhD from UAH after 2001, and enjoys playing and teaching the bagpipes.
