Description

Bob was born in Northport, AL, in 1931, and frequently moved in his youth, getting involved with the Air Force, and getting degrees in both mechanical and aeronautical engineering from the University of Alabama. He went on to work with Boeing, transferring to NASA in 1964. He worked in the QA lab for several years, then transferred to program development & worked on several studies. He would become program manager of the LAGEOS project in 1974, remaining until 1976, and recalling his involvement with the program and some of its challenges. Following this, he became chairman of the Source Selection Committee for a tethered satellite system; then served as resident manager in Germany for Spacelab, in which he experienced the diferent methodologies of European space agencies. Following Spacelab, he would retire in August 1981.
