Abstract

Sanjoy Som presented this paper at the 2008 International Astronautical Congress. He cited substantially the 1970 Stuhlinger letter to Mary Jucunda, a nun from Zambia. In it, he answered the question "Why is so much money spent on space exploration when there are so many problems right here on Earth?". Som states that to his knowledge, Ernst's response is the most through and complete answer to this question.
