Abstract

The Huntsville-Madison County Library sponsored a series of discussions ' A Century of Flight, the Rocket City Connection'. This series included several panel discussions, of which this is one. It was introduced by Bob Ward, former editor of the Huntsville Times, who offered a diverse presentation on the importance of von Braun's rocket team to America's space program and national defense.

This is an account by Ernst Stuhlinger of his experience in the German Army on the Russian front during the winter of 1942 - 1943. Upon his return to Germany from the Russian front, he found an order to report immediately to Peenemunde to work on a high priority technical war project.

In 1970, Dr. Stuhlinger, then associate deiector for science at MSFC, received a letter from Sister Mary Jucunda in Zanbia asking how he can suggest the expenditure of billions of dollars for a voyage to Mars at a time when many children on this Earth are starving to death. This is his answer, reproduced for distribution by the National Space Club.
