Biographical / Historical

Friends of German Culture was organized in 1977. The activities they were involved with include:

Promoting social, cultural, and entertainment opportunities for members and other residents interested in German language and culture.

Maintaining relations with Bundeswehr members stationed in Huntsville and assisting in the planning and promotion of events of mutual interest.

Maintaining relations with the German Club of the University of Alabama in Huntsville and assisting in the planning and promotion of events of mutual interest.

Assisting the Huntsville/Madison County Council for International Visitors in programs requiring briefings and/or hospitality for official guests from German-speaking nations.

Assisting local universities, public and private school systems, public libraries, arts councils, and other organizations in programs of mutual interest.

Assisting the Alabama Space and Rocket Center, the Industrial Development Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other organizations in programs requiring the linguistic and/or other expertise available among members of the organization.

Maintaining relations with the Atlanta-based Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Goethe Institute (German Cultural Center), and the German-American Chamber of Commerce.

Acting as regional catalyst for the promotion of improved understanding and relations between citizens of the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Processing Information

Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, and competing priorities. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections as they are acquired, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.
