Scope and Contents
Document Type: Presentation (Industry).
Purpose: Informational.
Authority: Author Expertise.
Scope: 23rd Wings Club General Harold R. Harris "Sight" Lecture, presented on May 21, 1986 at the Wings Club, New York City by Joseph F. Sutter, Executive Vice President, Boeing Commercial Airplane Company. Sutter is an aeronautical engineer who joined Boeing in 1945 and played a key role in designing and building iconic aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and Boeing 747.
Contents (from the Introduction): "In helping me prepare for this lecture the chairman of your historical committee Alec Ogston was kind enough to send me most of the past lectures. I began reading them and soon found myself enjoying them because, collectively, they are an amazing history of the development of aviation. Some of the past lecturers were people of great assistance to me during my stint in commercial aviation.
I will follow the format of most of the previous 'Sight' lectures. First, I'll review some of the highlights of events that occurred during my "watch" in commercial transport development and then offer some observations on the U.S. aviation industry - and why I believe continued success requires that all of us in the aviation industry - manufacturers, airlines, governmental agencies and the other benefitting participants - renew our commitments through cooperation to developing the best and safest air transportation system."
