Scope and Contents

Document Type: Textbook (Technical) Purpose: Training & Education Authority: Author Expertise

Scope: Textbook written by Robert H. Thorner, "Development Engineer, Formerly with Holley Carburetor Company." Initial audience appears to be the large number of military aircraft mechanics being trained by the U.S. military during WWII. Post-war audience was likely growing number of engine mechanics and engineers in rapidly growing commercial aviation field.

From the Preface: "This book is the outgrowth of a series of lectures given by the author for the Engineering, Science, and Management Defense Training courses conducted in 1942 by the University of Michigan in Detroit. These lectures were later printed and distributed by the Holley Carburetor Company and the Wright Aeronautical Corporation for their service schools. The method used in discussing the material in the lectures is followed closely in this book. The subject matter in this presentation is concerned only with the fundamental principles of carburetors and related equipment. Maintenance, overhaul, and design considerations have been omitted in order to present a concise and uninterrupted discussion of the operating principles. Since these principles apply to all types of aircraft carburetors and engines, an important qualification must be made: The charts and data used in this book are intended to be generally representative; minor variations have been disregarded in order to concentrate on explaining the important principles."
