From the Preface: "In 1972, the Federal Aviation Administration published a series of three Advisory Circulars providing background information for mechanic certification applicants. These are en-titled: Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics General Handbook, AC 65-9; Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Powerplant Handbook, AC 65-12; and Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Airframe Handbook, AC 65-15. These three handbooks were written to cover the area over which a mechanic applicant was to be tested, and they were an attempt by the FAA to coordinate the information available to the applicants with the tests that were given for certification. In 1976, the three handbooks were revised into their present A Revision format: AC 65-9A, AC 65-12A, and AC 65-15 A. Individuals attempting to certificate under FAR Part 65, as well as schools operating under FAR Part 147, have found that these handbooks actually do not follow the material used in the FAA examinations, and because of this, plus their lack of study helps, they fail to effectively provide the broad base of knowledge needed for certification and for a foundation on which to build in the aviation maintenance industry.

Realizing the need for updated information, presented in a format that is in keeping with the latest developments in educational technology, the Aviation Maintenance Publishers, Inc., is offering an Integrated Training Program (ITP) that presents the basic information needed for mechanic certification, in a form that will provide a good foundation in aviation maintenance know-ledge. Developed in coordination with Crane Aeronautical Activities, Inc., the ITP training manuals, workbooks, study guides, and audio-visuals are designed to follow the FAA written examinations and are written to the level required for the FAR Part 147 schools. All of this material can be used by an individual preparing for certification on his own, or by schools preparing groups of individuals for certification under FAR Part 65, but it has been

All of this material can be used by an individual preparing for certification on his own, or by schools preparing groups of individuals for certification under FAR Part 65, but it has been prepared primarily for the Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools operating under FAR Part 147. Not only has every attempt been made to meet the requirements of Part 147, in producing this series, but the authors have followed many of the recommendations of the Aviation Mechanic Occupation Study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles, under a contract from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

One of the most basic premises of aviation maintenance is that all operations must be carried out according to FAA-approved data, and all information of a specific nature furnished by the manufacturer of an aircraft, powerplant, or component must be followed in detail. These training manuals are, of necessity, general in nature and cover a wide scope of aircraft, powerplants, and components. Because of this, it must be understood that they should never be allowed to take precedence over specific information furnished by the manufacturer."
