Aircraft Powerplants (Sixth Edition), 1990, 1990
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Textbook (Technical)
Purpose: Training & Education
Authority: Author Expertise
Series: Glencoe Aviation Technology Series.
Scope (from the Preface): "This textbook is the sixth edition of Aircraft Powerplants, two editions of which had the title Powerplants for Aerospace Vehicles. This edition contains all the essential information contained in earlier editions plus additional material relating to new powerplants. Aircraft Powerplants, Sixth Edition, is designed to assist the student in attaining the proficiency levels defined in current Federal Aviation Regulations when used as a study text in connection with classroom discussions, demonstrations, and practical application.
In preparing this edition, the authors have reviewed all documents published by the Federal Aviation Administration relating to the training of aviation maintenance students and the operation, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft powerplants. Manufacturers' manuals, bulletins, and other documents have been examined to ensure that accurate information is presented.
FAR Part 147 has been used for reference to ensure that FAA requirements are met. The FAA Written Test Guide, Advisory Circular AC 65-22, has been reviewed carefully so that all the technical data needed by the student to pass FAA written and oral examinations is covered. In addition, suggestions and recommendations have been solicited and received from aviation instructors, aircraft engine manufacturers, aviation operators, and maintenance specialists. The new information added to the text includes descriptions of some of the latest powerplants, accessories, and systems.
Aircraft Powerplants is one of four textbooks in the McGraw-Hill Aviation Technology Series. The other books in the series are Aircraft Basic Science, Aircraft Maintenance and Repair, and Aircraft Electricity and Electronics. When used together in an Airframe and Powerplant maintenance training program, these texts encompass information on all phases of airframe and powerplant technology.
Each topic in Aircraft Powerplants has been explained in as much detail as possible to ensure that the student will gain the knowledge of theory and maintenance principles at a level which meets the requirements of the Federal Aviation Regulations. This book is designed to be used as both a classroom text and as an on-the-job reference for the technician."
