Aircraft Engine Mechanics Manual (Second Printing), 1932, 1934-10
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Textbook (Technical)
Purpose: Training & Education
Authority: Author Expertise
Scope: Textbbok written by C. John Moors "Chief Instructor, Department of Mechanics, Air Corps Technical School, United States Army"
From Preface: "Safety in flying depends largely upon the reliability of the engine; this can be attained only by skillful operation, maintenance, and repair. The engine manufacturer employs only the highest grade of material and workmanship, which, if also employed by the operator and service mechanic, would materially increase the reliability and life of the average engine. Skill in this connection requires essentially a thorough knowledge of the power plant principles, which may be gained only by systematic study followed by intelligent application. Many novices feel capable of undertaking aircraft engine repairs without thoroughly understanding the fundamentals of the subject. Because of the danger to life, this cannot be permitted; unskilled workmanship eventually will result in disaster.
This book has been written primarily as a text for student aircraft pilots and engine mechanics; also as a reference for airmen of every class.
Wherever possible, subjects of like nature have been arranged into groups that are believed to be the most suitable for school purposes. The author endeavored to generalize so far as possible, but where the general information alone was considered inadequate, specific information relative to certain representative types of equipment has been included.
The writer is particularly grateful for valuable assistance and cooperation by the following individuals and organizations: Air Corps, United States Army, for permission to use various technical publications and Air Corps Technical School pamphlets. Mr.
Wm. H. Jackson, Senior Instructor Airplane Engines, Air Corps Technical School, United States Army. Mr. H. E. Johanson, Instructor, Airplane Engine Ignition, Air Corps Technical School, United States Army. Messrs. A. P. Lantis, Senior Instructor, and L. A. Rulifson, Instructor, Mechanical Drafting, Air Corps Technical School, United States Army."
