Scope and Contents

Document Type: Training Material (Test/Examine). Purpose: Training & Education. Authority: Commercial (Services).

NB: 24th Revised Edition with June 1970 Supplement.

Scope: Study manual written by Charles A. Zweng, author of numerous books such as Aeronautical Training, Flight Engineers Manual, Ground Instructor, etc."

From the Preface: "This manual is designed as a study guide and preparation for the written examinations for the FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics' Ratings. It includes basic text material on aircraft engines and the maintenance, repair and alteration of airframes, as well as more than 2,600 questions (with correct answers) which are representative of those given in the FAA Airframe and Powerplant exams.

The book has been in print continuously since 1942; it has been revised 23 times and reprinted on three other occasions. In this 24th edition nearly 250 new multiple-choice questions have been added (see Section 10). These questions reflect recent additions to the FAA exams, but their inclusion here does not in any way lessen the value of the questions retained from previous editions (Sections 5 through 9). As a candidate for either the Airframe or Powerplant Rating you may be given any one of 20 or more different sets of FAA exams; it is the aim of this manual to prepare you for all of them.

Unquestionably, the Airframe and Powerplant written examinations currently being given by the FAA are more demanding than ever before. They assume a really broad background of practical experience and they call for a serious study of theory and first principles. They also now include questions on helicopters and on turboprop and turbojet engines. And on all the standard A. and P. subjects, especially electrical systems, the questions simply require greater knowledge. This edition of Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics' Manual mirrors these developments.

(See supplement inside front cover for latest information about this manual and how to obtain the most value from it.)"
