Contents (from Preface):
"AIRCRAFT ENGINES OF THE WORLD, 1957 edition, comprises the fifteenth annual presentation of the world's powerplants for aviation. This year, it has been completely rewritten to ensure uniform standardization, with English and metric equivalents. The latest information from the Paris Aero Show in May has been included, making it the most up-to-date and authoritative reference book in its field.
Nuclear Aircraft Engines is a subject which is included for the first time. There is a resume of the progress made, and methods of applying reactor heat to turbojets for jet propulsion are described.
The Turbojets and Turboprops (main powerplants) section now occupies 164 pages, and contains descriptions of 92 engines, of which 18 are new. The engines for the new gas turbine engined airliners are an outstanding feature. The turbojets include the General Electric CJ-805, the Pratt & Whitney J13C and JT4A, the Wright TJ38 Zephyr, the Rolls-Royce Avon 29 and Conway IO, and the U.S.S.R. MIK-209. The turboprops include the Allison 501, the Bristol Orion, the Rolls-Royce Dart and Tyne, and the U.S.S.R. Type K. Other new aircraft engines in this section include the high-power General Electric J79, Pratt & Whitney J75, Bristol Olympus 6, Orenda Iroquois, S.N.E.C.M.A. ATAR 9, and U.S.S.R. MIK-205; the medium power Westinghouse J54, De Havilland Gyron Junior, Napier Eland 7, Dassault R-7, and Hispano-Suiza R-804; and the relatively low-power Lycoming T55, Turboméca Astazou and Bastan, and Fiat 4002.
The Specialized Gas Turbines section includes auxiliary gas turbines manufactured by Airesearch, Boeing, Continental, Solar, Blackburn & General, Rover and Turboméca. The Marquardt RJ-43 ramjet used in the Boeing Bomarc IM-99, and S.E.P.R. rocketjets and the Sud-Aviation Trident II interceptor, will be found in this section.
The Reciprocating Engines section is presented in unit page form, permitting the number of basic powerplants to be increased from 55 to 61. Among the new engines are the Continental FSO-526, the McCulloch 4318 and TC 6150, the Nelson H-63, the Bristol Hercules 815, the Praga Doris B, the Walter Minor M-332, the Porsche 678, and the Polish W.N.3. A tabulation of 29 helicopter engines is included.
The Accessories and Equipment section presents many of the latest aviation products of the United States and Great Britain.
The Fuel and Lubricating Oil tabulations have been completely revised, and now include ramjet and rocketjet fuels.
A Conversion Table page has been added, with American, English and metric equivalents; and other important information.
The Aircraft and Their Engines section contains 6 up-to-date tabulations, including one of Gas Turbine Engined Airliners and Their Engines."
