Scope and Contents

Document Type: Book (Technical Reference)

Purpose: Informational

Authority: Author Expertise

Series: Aeroplane Maintenance and Operation Series, Volume 5

Scope: A detailed technical manual "compiled by a panel of experts," overseen by General Editor, E. Molloy and Advisory Editor, E.W. Knott. The editors write that "...this book is offered to the ground engineer and air mechanic in the firm belief that it will be found invaluable whenever any practical difficulty has to be overcome in connection with these famous engines, selected from the Armstrong Siddeley range."

Contents include (from the Preface): "Three outstanding examples from the Armstrong Siddeley range of engines form the subject-matter of the present volume. The engines in question are: the "Cheetah IX," the "Tiger VIII," and the "Lynx IVC." The "Cheetah IX" is an excellent example of a 7-cylinder radial aircooled engine, with moderate supercharging, developing 350 h.p. at its maximum power rating. The "Tiger VIII" is a 14-cylinder, radial, aircooled engine, developing 860 h.p. at its maximum power rating. The "Lynx IVC" is a power unit of considerably lower capacity, being rated at 240 h.p. under maximum power conditions.

Each section begins by describing briefly the leading features of the engine under discussion. Detailed instructions are then given for the dismantling, inspection, and re-assembling of the component parts. Broadly speaking, each section deals with what may be described "top overhaul," and particular attention has been given to the correct use of tools which have been designed to facilitate the work on the various engines.

Wherever possible the detailed description of methods to be adopted has been supplemented by perspective drawings. It has been found by experience that graphic illustrations of this type can often be used to convey practical information much more effectively than pages of descriptive text. We believe that every reader will appreciate the advantage of these illustrations.

We are especially indebted to the Armstrong Siddeley Company for their invaluable assistance in the compilation of this section. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the information given is up to date, it will be realised that minor improvements and modifications are continually being made in aero engines which are in such extensive use in military and civil aircraft.

Under their special service scheme the makers issue from time to time to authorised persons sheets containing particulars of any such modifications or alterations in operating and maintenance procedure, and this point should be borne in mind by the ground engineer. In any case of doubt, an enquiry addressed to the makers, Messrs. Armstrong Siddeley Motors Ltd., Coventry, will receive expert attention."
