Document Type: Technical Research Report
Authority: Government Military (authoritative reference)
Document Number: Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics Technical Note No. 110 (dated 1923), based on "Reprint of T. N. [Bureau of Aeronautics Technical Note] No. 234, Issued Dec. 15, 1922."
Scope: Report #53341-23 prepared by "Commander J. C. Hunsaker (C.C.), U.S.N. [United States Navy]"
Contents: "NOTES ON CURTISS MARINE TROPHY RACE.
The following table gives the general results of this race. The first lap is not strictly comparable because that was the time from a running start on the water until a return in the air over a sighting line by the home pylon. The second, third, and fourth laps are entirely in the air and are, therefore, strictly comparable for determining speeds provided engine revolutions are normal and piloting a straight course. The fifth lap is not strictly comparable because at the finish of it the pilot was required to land on the water and he, therefore, slowed down a little before landing in the water control. Landings were made in the water controls between the fifth and sixth, between the sixth and seventh, and between the seventh and eighth laps. Therefore, these laps cannot be counted on for judging relative air speeds. The air speed made on the second, third, and fourth laps should be comparable between the different planes, but is without reference to the straight air speeds that these planes can and did make because of the irregular shape of the course flown and the strong cross wind blowing."
