Scope: Report #52352-23 prepared by "Commander J. C. Hunsaker, C. C., U. S. N. [United States Navy]"
Contents: "DORNIER FOUR-ENGINE MONOPLANE SEAPLANE.
The Dornier monoplane is an experimental machine designed by the chief engineer of the Zeppelin Co., Friederichshafen. Dornier has had little experience in flying-boat design, but he has had considerable airplane experience in connection with Friederichshafen twin-engine night bombers. These latter machines have been used by the German Navy when mounted on twin floats. There is also a twin-float Friederichshafen seaplane having four engines arranged as in the machine under discussion, but with an external reduction gear for each propeller. The influence of Dornier on the large monoplane is seen in the liberal use of duralumin. This very corrosive material is of questionable value near salt water. External parts are painted, but the metal inside the fuselage is left bright."
