"OBJECT
The object of this test was to determine the aero-dynamic characteristics of the A-1 airplane.
DATE AND PLACE
The A-1 model was tested in the 4-foot and 7}-foot wind tunnel at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Only the aileron tests were run in the 7} foot tunnel.
DESCRIPTION
The A-1 (ambulance) airplane is a single Liberty motored single bay biplane of the diagonally braced lower wing stub type. Each axle of the divided two wheeled landing gear forms one leg of a "V" which is pivoted about the center line of the bottom of the fuselage and which straddles out under the wing stub in such a manner that the landing shock is taken by the front spar of the wing stub through a shock absorbing strut attached to the axle just inside the wheel. The "hump backed" fuselage is deep enough to house the surgeon and two patients in litters. The four unbalanced ailerons and the unbalanced tail surfaces are of the usual type."
