From the Preface: “The Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine and Its Operation, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Operating Instructions 200, has been rewritten to provide aircraft flight and ground crews with a practical basic manual for aircraft gas turbine engines. Numerous good texts are available to the student of theory and design of aircraft gas turbines, on the one hand, and to operational crews in the form of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engine Maintenance Manuals, General and Specific Operating Instructions, aircraft Flight Handbooks and military Technical Orders, on the other. The Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine and Its Operation is intended to fill the gap between the two. Since basic aircraft gas turbine engine designs are now fairly well established, this book brings previously published material up to date and covers the subject in somewhat greater detail than has been done before. A comprehensive knowledge of how and why an engine operates is a fundamental prerequisite of intelligent, efficient and safe flying. The same axiom also applies to engine maintenance. It is hoped that this book will serve to fulfill this requirement.”
