The Gnome Engine, a Revolutionary Engine for its Time, 1984-10-13
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Historical Monograph (condensed version of author's Masters Thesis)
Contents primarily contain a reprint of an article titled "50 hp Gnome Omega #1" published in World War I Aeroplanes magazine (Issue No. 96, September 1983) "with thanks and credit to Leo Opdycke." Author added several small footnotes.
From Page 1: ""The following article and accompanying photographs and drawings have been contributed by Lauren McCready as noted below.
We are as lucky to have the privilege of printing parts of his thesis as he is to own the original 50hp Gnome Omega - and to have had the experiences related below.
THE INVENTION & DEVELOPMENT OF THE GNOME ROTARY AERO ENGINE- THE WORK OF LOUIS AND LAURENT SEGUIN by Lauren S McCready, Rear Admiral, USMS (Ret)
169 Gallows Hill,
W Redding, CT 06896
This is a condensation of my thesis for the Degree of Master of Science (History of Science) given by the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, 1973 (the 2d such degree Poly ever awarded).
My interest in rotary aero engines began to develop over 20 years ago, an offshoot of my lifelong interest in things aeronautical. I nearly made a career in aviation, but the Merchant Marine and ships, my even greater calling, won out. For reasons I do not myself understand, the Gnome appealed to me early on, and I began to study it and collect all sorts of references.
The spark, of all my lifetime sparks the most profound, occurred in the summer of 1969 when I was in Europe to study the Esso tanker-model school at Lac Revel, Grenoble, and I stopped off in Paris instead of merely flying home. In the Musée de l'Air I was reading Gnome material when an attendant, whose name is regrettably not known' to me, tapped me on the shoulder. 'Why don't you see the Seguins' granddaughter? She lives right here in Paris?' So I did."
