Pilot's Powerplant Manual, 1942
Scope and Contents
Document Type: Pilot's Manual
Authority: Government Regulator (authoritative reference)
Document Number: Civil Aeronautics Bulletin No. 28
Preface: "This manual has been prepared for use as a textbook in the Civilian Pilot Training Program. Specifically, it is designed for use in the ground school work of the controlled restricted commercial course of the program. However, the book should be of great assistance to all flying students preparing for the examinations required for issuance of the commercial pilot certificate.
Present practice considers the engine, the propeller, and the engine accessories as a single unit called the powerplant since all of these affect the performance of the entire installation in modern aircraft, and for this reason the book is titled a powerplant manual.
The subject has been developed in such a way as to aid the pilot throughout his training period, particularly when he advances from aircraft with few instruments and controls to the more complicated (especially the multiengine) types having upward of 100 instruments and controls which must be kept within specified limits. he advances from aircraft with few instruments and controls to the more complicated (especially the multiengine) types having upward of 100 instruments and controls which must be kept within specified limits.
An effort has been made to present the material in a general way instead of treating specific types or makes of powerplants. Specific information varies widely with the individual products of the different manufacturers, and ob- viously it would be impractical to attempt to cover fully all existing power- plants. As to the treatment of the subject as a whole, it also should be obvious that & complete coverage of all phases would entail a far more detailed study than the space limitations of this book permit.
Furthermore, the text is intended to aid in training pilots to operate the powerplant properly and is not written to be used in training skilled maintenance technicians. Grateful acknowledgment is made to the Army Air Corps, the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department, and to the many engine, propeller, and accessories manufacturers for their cooperation in making available certain material used in the preparation of this book.
Acknowledgment is also made to the University of Alabama in appreciation of its generosity in making avail- able its facilities during the actual writing of this and other pilot training texts prepared during the summer of 1940.
The preparation of the manual as a whole was the work of L. E. Shedenhelm, Senior Aircraft Inspector, Civil Aeronautical Administration, assisted by John S. Parker, Jr."
