Abstract

"The Space Shuttle Columbia begins its fourth test flight on June 27, 1982.

Propelled by a thrust of more than six and one-half million pounds, the Space Shuttle thunders its way into space. Most of the liftoff thrust is provided by two reusable Solid Rocket Boosters that straddle the brown external tank.

Three minutes into the flight, the boosters are exhausted, separated from the external tank, and lowered by parachutes for ocean recovery. The three main engines in the Orbiter's tail section continue to fire for six and one-half minutes after booster separation. Liquid oxygen and hydrogen are gulped at a rate of 62,500 gallons per minute. When all propellants are exhausted, the external tank is jettisoned from the Orbiter, where it disintegrates above remotes ocean areas."
