Abstract
There is a description of Catherine Fearn Steele at the bottom of the painting: "Catherine Fearn (1828-1907), third daughter of Dr. Thomas Fearn, was educated at the Huntsville Female Seminary and Madame Canada's school in New York City. In 1848 she married Matthew Steele by whom she had nine children. She died of consumption in Avondale, Alabama, having moved there in 1883."
