General

Various passages written in German by Bettie's friends at school. The messages are all quotes from various German poets, nothing particularly personal. The original was given to the National Museum of American Jewish History in 2011. There are several copies, some of which have been transcribed into English. The Bernsteins sent their daughters, Bettie and Sophie, to boarding school in Germany sometime after the Civil War. Lilly was much younger. Parents possibly wanted their daughters to have the cultural experience of their homeland and have an opportunity to get to know their parents' families who lived in Germany. Also, they wanted their daughters to have a German education. According to Bettie's letter, their mother, Henrietta Bernstein, was to come over for a visit soon.
