General

Mentions that Bettie was the most active member of the United Charities of Huntsville that were incorporated in 1885 at a meeting at the Jewish Synagogue (the Congregation rented a room in the old Masonic Lodge on the corner of Lincoln and Williams from 1875-1899). She served as president of the United Charities in 1914. The organization was formed to help the sick and needy and to investigate those in need who worked at the mills. The group first went to the City Council to request improvement on teh mill conditions. Their major project was to request a hospital for Huntsville. Bettie was the leader of this project. The efforts of the group resulted in the beginning of Huntsville Hospital. Bettie was on their board of directors for many years. Also in this file are Henry Marks' notes on M.M. Newman, who was related to Henrietta Newman Bernstein, Bettie's mother. Newman's business was to be maintained by Oscar Goldsmith after Newman retired.
