General

Robert had died and the family business was being run by his wife, Rosa, and possibly one of Robert's brothers and/or son-in-law. During the 1870s, Robert Herstein, together with Morris Bernstein, purchased the building on the North Side of the square at the corner of Washington St. for Robert to use for his business, The Trade Palace. Robert paid Morris rent for his half interest in the building and after Robert died -- the heirs continued paying the Bernstein's rent for their 1/2 interest. After Rosa Herstein (Robert's wife) died, the building was rented and the net income divided between the Herstein and Bernstein heirs. MAG's grandfather, who was managing the property, was evntually able to buy out the Herstein heirs using funds of I. Schiffman & Co. He owned the other 1/2 interest and the property passed to MAG's father and she made an exchange with him of another property. She then owned 1/2 interest. After her father's death, she purchased the remaining 1/2 interest in the building from I. Schiffman & Co. and subsequently gave her interest in the building to her children. It has been sold.
