Dept. of Defense; as per the National Security Act of 1947, there was established the National Military Establishment, which was to be headed by the Secretary of the Defense and was to consist of the Dept. of the Army, Dept. of the Navy, Dept. of the Air Force, Joint Chiefs of Staff, etc. The act was amended in 1949 with the Establishment replaced by the Dept. of Defense and the other depts. became military depts. in lieu of their prior status as executive depts.)
